Dataw Island history goes way back, so far back it is hard to imagine.   Dataw Island history goes back to 10,000BC.  Ten thousand BC.  You wonder how do they know that.  Well, historians discovered ruins from the Paleo Indians. From the Paleo Indians of 10,000BC  they have found proof that the Spaniards were there before the Revolutionary War, 1514.  The Spanish, French and English battled for this island back in the 1300s, 200 years before the Revolutionary War.  These discoveries lead   historians to want to know what was the allure with Dataw Island’s.  During the Plantation era, Dataw was know for it’s indigo and cotton.  South Carolina’s sea islands became the “Newport of the South” and the with the wealth of indigo and cotton soon Plantations were being built. These grand manors, defined Dataw until the Civil War ended the end of an era. But Dataw still hummed with life as a quiet hunting preserve for The next century brought Dataw to to the quiet tranquil island with plenty of animals to hunt.  Dataw Island became a hunting preserve.

Today, the place where fertile soil hosted indigo and cotton on antebellum plantations is still home to rich experiences. History lives in the foundations of the 18th century structures made of local sand, lime, water and oyster shells that still stand. And history’s love affair with the land still burns strong.

English started moving down from Charleston and bringing a different group of Indian traders  in 1670.  Dataw Island has a wonderful Historic group of individuals preserving the history of Dataw Island.
